Venn Diagram 2.0: Antonetti's Lined Venn Diagram
Venn diagrams have been used as a comparison/contrast graphic organizer since Marzano's research in the 80's. However, for teachers today, we want to push our kids further than just making a list to compare and contrast two things.
The Venn Diagram 2.0 is more focused than the original. It's a "forced comparison" rather than a freestyle because it asks the students to identify the attribute they are comparing. See the simplified example below. In this example, students are comparing the two main characters in the novella Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia Maclachlan:

As you can see, differences are still placed in the outer parts of the circles and similarities are placed in the middle. However, the lines to the left of the conjoined circles ask the students to name the pattern. This is what will move thinking forward. Once the students have their thinking on the sheet, it's very easy to turn it into a written response. See below.
In the book Sarah, Plain and Tall, the characters of Sarah and Jacob are both similar and different. One way they are different is their looks. Sarah is plain and Jacob is handsome. Another difference is the reason they are lonely. Sarah's brother got married so she was left alone, and Jacob's wife passed away, leaving him a single dad. One thing they had in common was the love they had for Jacob's kids.
