Students love pictures. Approximately 65% of the population are visual learners, so using photographs, paintings, cartoons, etc. can be a worthwhile task for students to connect classroom content.
Emergent writers can readily use pictures to spur their thinking. Students in grades 5-8 who are more efficient writers can use visual images to prompt ideas and stimulate their imaginations as well. Think about some of the following ways to use pictures in the classroom:

- Use a political cartoon to ask students to think about the techniques the illustrators uses to challenge beliefs.
- A photo of a giant whale parked on a city street with a prompt asking students to take on the role of a news reporter to describe the scene.
- A portrait of Mona Lisa to get kids to think about someone in their lives they might honor with such a portrait.

Another option would be to offer a picture and ask students a question like: "How does this picture relate to _______________?" (And just fill in the blank with your content or leadership). Check out this example:
