Listening to directions is a skill that we start training kids to do from a very young age. I have worked with the First Steps program with the foster kids I keep, and one of their goals as 2 and 3 year old children is to follow one, two, and three step directions. It seems kind of ridiculous then that we have to remind 10-14 year old kids to read and listen to directions, but that is a test strategy we need to constantly review.
Below you will see a document that can be used in class to teach kids the importance of following directions. Have your kids take the test first. Then have a short discussion about the "test." What was surprising? When did they begin to suspect that there was more to it than just a test? How many people actually followed the directions?
Try this out during your RTI/Enrichment time this week!
